Overview

The Patrol Division is responsible for the protection of life and property, and the enforcement of federal, state, and county laws and ordinances. The patrol function involves the prevention and intervention of adult and juvenile crime, rendering assistance to citizens in need of service, apprehension of law violators, and traffic enforcement. The Patrol Division responds to calls for service as dispatched, and prepares reports and other documentation about action taken for use in record keeping and prosecution purposes.

Marathon County is the largest of Wisconsin 's 72 counties with an area of 1,584 square miles. Our deputies patrol 3,270 miles of federal, state, and local roadways.

Functions

Duties of the Patrol Division include but are not limited to:

  • Enforcement of all State Motor Vehicle Laws (criminal & civil)
  • Investigation of traffic crashes (to include Crash Reconstruction when applicable)
  • Preliminary investigation of property crimes & crimes against persons
  • Preliminary investigation of sudden deaths
  • Response to civil disputes and aid to citizens
  • Response to disasters (natural & man-made)
  • Provide security for special events

DNR Grant-Funded Programs, Safety Programs, ATV, Boat, Snowmobile Patrol

The Marathon County Sheriff's Office provides law enforcement patrols on the county's ATV trails, snowmobile trails, lakes, reservoirs, streams, and rivers. These patrols serve to ensure the safety and enjoyment of the public involved in recreational activities.

Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Enforcement of Department of Natural Resources (DNR) codes & laws
  • Investigation of ATV, boat, and snowmobile crashes
  • Assisting with the investigation of crimes involving ATVs, boats, or snowmobiles
  • Reporting safety hazards on trails or waterways
  • Assisting in search & rescue efforts

Safety Programs

The Marathon County Sheriff's Office is the primary provider of ATV, boat, hunter and snowmobile safety classes in Marathon County . These classes are provided to youth and adults and assist in accident prevention and help reduce citizen complaints.
