The Marathon County Health Department Environmental Health and Safety program has three primary program areas: Licensing, Human Health Hazards, and Water Testing.

Within Licensing, Marathon County has contracts with the Department of Agriculture, Trade, and Consumer Protection (DATCP) and the Department of Safety and Professional Services (DSPS), licenses and inspects businesses including restaurants, grocery and convenience stores, lodging, campgrounds, recreational and educational camps, swimming pools, mobile home parks, and body art facilities.

Human Health Hazards, defined in State Statue 254.01, as “a substance, activity, or condition that is known to have the potential to cause acute or chronic illness, to endanger life, to generate or spread infectious diseases, or otherwise injuriously to affect the health of the public” and is a state requirement for all local health departments.

Criteria are used to assess a human health hazard concern. Guidance and enforcement occurs when needed to limit human health hazard risks. The Water Testing program analyzes public and private drinking water samples and recreational water samples. The intent of the Animal Bite and Rabies programming to prevent humans from contracting rabies under State Statute 95 related to quarantine and veterinarian exams.
